View Full Version : What is this buzz? And seat replacement?

Just bought an '01 CBR6004Fi and luv it!!:ohyaaa

Only concern, which may not be a big deal, is that I get a buzzing noise in I think every gear when I get to about 4K rpms and it goes to about 4.25K. At first I thought maybe it was the fan (if you had a metal keychain bouncing around the ignition you'd think it was that just vibrating).

Now no smart replies saying that I'm riding too low in the gear, K?

Oh, and any thoughts on what would be a good alternative to the stock seat? With a 1/2hr ride to work, my tail gets a bit bothered.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Actually, MishMash might have some advice for this...his wife had the same bike for years. I was looking at buying the exact same bike, so I'm glad to hear you love it. Congrats!

I get that at 7.5K on my CBR, and every bike has some point at which it resonates seems to me. Check all your motor mounts, and make sure your exhaust is secure and not touching the frame anywhere.

Corbin (http://corbin.com/honda/cbrf4i.shtml) makes aftermarket seats that many swear by.

It's most likely the CCT (cam chain tentioner). The OEM automatic tentioner will go bad and doesn't give it proper tention. I replaced it with a manual on my 02 F4i, http://www.cbrzone.com/sprockets.html, before I sold it. Replacing it is pretty straight forward, but the spot is small so getting your hands in there is a pain.

+1 on the CCT. APE makes a manual version for $50 that fixes this problem permanently. OEM replacement will mean that it'll have to be changed out again in a few thousand miles.

corbin and sargeant both make seats for the F4i. i had a corbin and it was ok. it raises saddle height by about 1/2" or is wider so it's harder to get your feet down, but since the F4i saddle is so low anyway, it's probably worth it.

I've done some more research & the symptoms seem to be in line with the Cam Chain Tensioner. Evidently not an uncommon problem.

CCT does seem to be it. But I sure hope you are wrong on having to potentially replace it a few thousand miles later. I'm gonna stand pat for now & if it ticks me off enough then I'll do the fix.

Thanks for the Corbin note, too!

my pleasure.

also, the OEM honda units are prone to frequent failure, but the APE manual tensioner is bulletproof and should be a permanent fix. i'm not sure how much more it costs than the OEM part, but at $50, it's not a fortune.

so does CCT only need replacing on earlier models? How bout the 2007's?

I'm not sure about the later models, but the cam chain tensioner issue was very common on the F4i line up from 2002-2005.

Hmm - my motor buzzes like that at 7.5K and its getting annoying. It didn't used to do it either. Hmmm.

Hey that noise sounds exactly like my CBR600RR 2008. Every time I start out from stoplight, as I am giving a tiny bit of throttle, say 2000 rpm while letting clutch out slowly, it is usually in this section that I hear something like keys dangling under my tank or tamborines wrapped in a pillow and attached to my front radiator. Dealer told me that is the cam chain making that noise. Swear wearing my helmet, however, it sounds like engine pinging.
