Hey All, I been told by my dealer and owners manual that 10W30 is the recommended oil for the 08 CBR600. I want to put 10W40 but was advised for the first 600 miles, you want rings to seat so thinner oil is the right call. OK after 600 miles I do an oil change, do I put 10W30 and change to 10W40 at 1000 miles or can I move up to 10W40 after 600 miles or do I just continue to use 10W30. My feeling is, if Honda engineers said 10W30, they must have had a good reason for not going with 10W40.

What's your reason for going with 10W40? If the manual stated 10W30, then I'd stick with it. From what I was told increasing the viscosity of the oil also increases drag and friction, which can reduce hp.

Running 15-50 red cap mobil one here. Changed out after the first 100 miles. I'm at 15k miles now and 20% of that has been spent trying to get close to lap records and being treated like a proper race bike. No probs here.

I guarantee you will have a motor oil debate on every motorcycle/car forum that you visit.

Also remember, Honda recommends their oils based on a safe choice for everyone. if you were using your bike to commute in Alaska, you might want to run something a little thinner than if you are doing a burnout contest in Death Valley. In the spring and fall i will run thinner (5wX) than mid summer(10wX). thats just me though. as for the break in. just changing it a couple times during the first few thousand is the best thing you can do. regardless of weight....

Yes - the debate goes on. I run Shell 5W-40 Rotella T synthetic with frequent oil changes. In Cali, we are still seeing 100+ temps, but with 60 deg. mornings, so I think I'm covered.

I recently used Motul 300v Factory Line on my street bike, will probably switch my track bike to it as well.

i was using mobile 4XT 10w40 and while in summer i think it was great, in the fall around 45 degrees i noticed my engine seemed like there was a huge drag on it. As it turned out i switched to 10w30 and my motor not only had more pep, my valves no longer chattered in cold morning startups

+1 on the Mobil 1 15-50. You can buy a 5 quart jug at Wal-Mart for a good price.

But I switched over to full synthetic after 1K miles.

Anyone run the "motorcycle specific" Mobil1? Just curious.

here is the real deal. I live in Chicago and at 45 degrees, running Mobile 10w40 4XT and full synthetic, I started my CBR and heard an awful clatter that lasted for a quarter of a second. It was the lifters making contact with the cams with no film of oil. I switched to 10w30 full synthetic and after I did that, during cold startups never did I hear anymore lifter noises. The bike also seems more slow with 10w40 in it. Seems like too much drag on motor.
