View Full Version : CBR600 Noise
I do not know if any of you experienced this when taking off normally from a stop light. I have a 2008 CBR600RR, I would, for instance, give a tiny bit of throttle from the 1500 idle rpm, and be near and around 2000 rpm when I slowly release the clutch. It is often during the "friction zone" or engagement will I hear what appeared to be a "pinging" noise from my engine. I took my helmet off and could never get that to reproduce. The only noise I hear is if I can describe what it sounds like, imagine a musical instrument "tamborine." Now imagine wrapping a pillow around it to basically muffle the noise, and then glueing it to your CBR radiator, it is a very subtle noise, have to really listen for it, but that is exactly how my bike sounds when I slowly take off and usually after around 3000 rpm I can no longer hear it and sometimes it doesn't make that noise at all, but most of the time and with consistency It sounds like muffled tamborine attached to my radiator. If anybody experiences the same noise, please reply. thanks!

Does another part of the bike touch up against the radiator? Maybe within that particular rpm range, it creates the perfect vibration to cause the ringing. I have a line that touches a fairing and only makes noise at a certain rpm...just a thought. I hope it's nothing more serious...the bike is so new! Maybe someone here has another thought.
No I think it is definitely the valves making that noise, almost 100% positive. The tamborine was just an illustration
I went to the dealer and after the technician looked at it, he said it was definitely the cam chain tensioner causing that tamborine sounding noise taking off slowly from the light. He said the way I used to describe the sound was very very good. Glad it wasn't a ping

Holy crap, I thought Honda would fix it by now. It's the same problem witht the F4i's.

Cam chain tensioner?
Hey Vtecc44, your bike also does the exact same noise as I described in the this thread? Well they said that is normal and that there is nothing wrong with it which i believe to be correct. They just said it was how the chain goes over and around the cams which causes that.
Hey I also read on another post, that the same noise I was hearing, Cam Chain tensioner, somebody else described the noise as someone was dangling keys under the gas tank.

It's hard to describe sound. I'll try to record it and post it up. My F4i did this at around 15k miles, and my 03 600RR is doing it at around 8k miles.

mine started getting louder after 2 trackdays...fixed it with a A/M manual CTT.
the dealer said that is completly normal and not a problem. I don't know why anybody would want to change or replace. You can hardly hear it.

Unless the automatic tentioner fail and doesn't do it's job, then the noise will get louder and louder. The problem is similar to the F4i's, http://www.600rrforum.com/forum/showthread.php?p=31604#post31604
well what is so strange is that very few people could relate to this noise. Anyway the cam chain noise is normal as it was explained to me

Its a common noise, and not necessarily normal. The tamborine sound COULD be because of an improperly functioning CCT, which results from not enough tension on chain, allowing slack and noise...THATS bad.
Trouble is, Honda hasnt done much to address it, and failures are far and few. In order to get max horse power, manufacturers try to put less and less tension on the cam chain, which any friction will rob power. This is the downside.
They are supposed to have anti backoff mechanisms, so that if there is any slack, they constantly take it up. Dont want that to fail
I too have your noise (07 cbr600rr)...but whatever I says....im gonna run it and revit and if the motor fails, I'll be dialing Honda:naughty2
Hey MishMash, your post along with others on this forum are dead on! Great call! Someone else described the noise as somebody dangling keys under the tank, I thought that was dead on. Well what kills me is wearing the helmet, it sounds like a dam engine ping. Anyway another weird thing I do not understand why Honda recommends 10W30 for the 2008 CBR. In other posts riders complain that their bike consumes oil. What I find unusual is my bike has 10W30 and for about three days in a row, keeping the revs cruising around 7000 RPM's. it won't burn a drop of oil. But then on the fourth day, suddenly it will burn 45ml of oil! The irony here is no blue smoke, no oil residue in my pipe, where did it all go? I called Belray and they told me 10w30 oil has a tendency when it gets hot to evaporate, the light end as they call it evaporates. I don't understand why Honda did not address the cam chain issue and do not understand why they would recommend a very thin oil. I am switching to Mobil 4XT 10w40 and hopefully that will stop the burning. Honda told me they consider 1L of oil per 1000 miles acceptable. I find that crazy! I am on pace to be burning possibly a half quart to 1 court per 1000 miles. another disturbing thing is I been told Honda put really thin rings on the cbr to make it light and fast. My Ninja 250 2008 was built tough. Had very strong pistons, very thick rings, the thing didn't burn a drop of oil. I am really disappointed I bought this Honda. I thought Honda was really good quality and it turns out Kawasaki probably makes a better bike

I'm glad I ran across this forum... I bought my bike earlier this year and over the last month or so thought I was going crazy because I swore I could hear the same thing from my bike that has been decribed here. I wasn't sure if it was normal or not.
Thanks for the info!

Hey Angry, yeah my bike does that noise, keys under seat jingling, that is the exact same with you too>? I guess it is normal.

It's a vibration sound (like keys under the tank). I thought it was something vibrating against my radiator or underneath the tank or something like that, but found nothing. The more I paid attention to it, the more it sounded like it was coming from inside the engine itself.
After reading through the post, the explanations seem plausable so I'm not worried about it anymore. I'll just run it as normal.
yeah angry, my bike too sounded like tamborines or keys jingling under tank or strapped to radiator. It only did it when finding the friction zone in clutch and between 1500 to 2400 rpm, and only when accelerating slowly from dead stop. I been told that it is cam chain making noise and normal.

I think Im due for a CCT. Ive ridden the bike for 13K miles, some of them damn hard track days. Its just sounding a bit harsher than new under the hood. Its my next project, but I'm not sure of I should go Automatic or manual CCT. Experts please chime in.
I heard it is better to go with a manual one.
