If I could do it all over again, I would have never traded in my 2008 Ninja 250R for the 08 CBR600RR. For starters, my CBR consumes about 100ml of oil every 500 miles, thus forcing me to add oil at least three times a week. Secondly, I get only 34mpg and I can get more if I lugg the engine or don't mind carboning up my cylinders. Honda says cruise around 7000 rpm's and no less than that. Thirdly, everytime I take off from the stop light, I release the clutch at the friction point, I give a tiny bit of throttle to around 2000 rpm and I swear my engine is borderline pinging. Actually it sounds just like keys dangling under gas tank. To be more specific, it's like the key code retangular tag that comes attached to one of your keys when you first buy the bike, it's like somebody shaking the key and causing that tag to rattle on the chain. My Ninja never made any kind of noise launching the bike and it got 64mpg. Actually when I listend more intently, It appears the keys jingling sounds like valves tapping but at different frequencies. Anyway dealer said it was camchain, I doubt that very much.

How many miles do you have on the bike? It shouldn't consume oil at all. If it does, take it back to the dealer and have them look at it since I'm assuming it's still under warranty. As far as MPG goes, that's pretty much average for a 600 race replica bike. My 03 has a slight sound, but it's not really noticeable.

On another note, I just bought a blue 2008 Ninja 250R. They're all sold out for 2008, and prices have been way up in So Cal for a used one. The 2009 bikes are going to be close to 5k for a 3.5k MSRP bike.

Honda says 1L per 1000 miles is normal. My bike has 1600 miles

Holy crap, that's new to me.

I think the oil consumption is because they use for I guess 07 and 08 very thin piston rings and the coating for cylinder is Nysail coated.

i haven't had any problems with my '08 consuming oil; i've noticed the mpg isn't awesome but i'm also not a commuter so that's no big deal either and my car (honda civic) gets about 33-37 mpg so i commute in my cage.

i'm sorry you are remorseful for having purchased the 08 RR, if you're really unhappy with it, perhaps you should try ridding yourself of it.

just a thought.

U should have no problem selling it if you aren't happy - its an awesome bike IMO and pretty desirable. Sell it before any redesign. To me. Or I'll trade you my DRZ. :D

Well I think I am going to sell it. Honda again says oil consumption 1L per 1000 miles is normal but that is an awful lot. My bike is not burning that much, it is probably more like every 500 miles, I have to add 100ml of oil, probably not that much. I figure most here who say their bike is not using oil probably doesn't watch it closely.

As far as I know my CBR doesn't either. But I'm careful not to overfill it too.

None of my 4-stroke street bikes burn oil, regardless of brand.

i HIGHLY doubt that honda said burning 1L of oil per 1000 miles on a brand new bike is "normal." think of all the squids who barely even know that a bike has oil.... they'd blow their engine out in 2-3K miles if that was the case. who at "honda" did you talk with who gave you this information? seems completely bogus to me. you need to take your bike into your dealer because something is wrong with it and you are still under warranty- perhaps you f'd up the break-in and the rings are not seating properly- thus the oil consumption.

cars and bikes in the 50s 60s and 70s and even 80s burned some oil, but the new ones don't. the tolerances on all internal components have become tighter and more precise. no 2008 model anything should burn oil unless it's a two-stroke. why would honda go back to technology from the 50's (mickey mouse tolerances- shitty compression) on a completely revolutionary/redesigned bike?! whoever told you it's normal to burn oil is just trying to cover their ass so they don't have to deal with tearing your engine down. if you're burning oil it means your compression is lower than it should be, which means you are not making as much power as you could be.

by the way- what type and grade of oil are you using and how did you break the bike in?

also, it could be that you're leaking oil as opposed to burning it. check your valve cover to see if there's oil residue around the gasket (and check all engine gaskets while you're at it). also, make sure your oil filter is torqued properly and that your drain bolt is torqued properly. make sure your oil cap is tight as well.

Dr. Go Fast, Honda Motor Corp themselves told me 1L per 1000 miles is normal. This was not coming from the consumer affairs rep, but from their engineers. I have also been told the same thing by two Honda Dealers who concurred with them. My cycle does not burn that much oil. I would say 100ml per 500 miles. I do cruise around 7000 rpm to 8,000 and the engineers at Honda Motor said high revs will cause this bike to consume oil. I think the reason it is consuming is because the rings are real thin by design.

Dr. GoFast

why do you cruise at such high rpm? i've updated my post ^^^ a few easy checks to perform that might help ^^^

I cruise at 7K-8K all day and at over 12K miles on my 07 i have NO oil consumption.

Dr. GoFast

why do you cruise at such high rpm?

why do you cruise at such high rpm?

I adopted the technique after riding track, and from Jason Pridmore's school. Staying in the mid band of the bike gives you maximum accel/decel control...good for track as well as emergency street manuevers. But to be honest, I think 7K is about 80mph anyway, which is avg. speed of freeways in LA with no traffic. :D

Riding round at 7K will not hurt the CBR, and I still avg. around 40 mpg.

well the consumer services rep from Honda Motor told me he has the same bike and also rides at 7000 rpm to avoid carboning up the cylinder. However, two local honda dealers told me with fuel injection, the computer knows where to be and absolutely will not carbon up.

f-that, i cruise the streets at 4-5.5. my bike has a pipe, k&n filter and dyno-tuned power commander. i have plenty of power at 4-6, no reason to go to 7-8. jkim, look at the bright side, burning a little bit of oil helps keep the valves lubricated so it could actually extend the life of the engine in reality to be burning a bit of oil :thumb maybe that's part of the design and why hondas last so long :D

perhaps and I have heard from other dealers that my complaint is not alone, that others also

Dude I think you may be over thinking it and measuring way too much. Just ride the shizz out of it and it'll be fine, they like a little abuse.

Having said that, I'll trade you my girls brand new 2008 Ninja 250 (blue). Perfect condition and always garaged and covered with low low miles. Of course I'll throw some cash in too. Serious offer if your up for it.

Happy with my '07. Hasn't burnt any oil and i've got 6k on her. As for riding it hard...in the twisties she doesn't drop below 7k but on the street I stay around 4k so if I need to get on the gas the front won't come up. :)

Well I never thought my rings would fully seat but now that my bike has 3400 miles, it does not burn a drop of oil.

well I now have 5900 miles and bike no longer consumes any oil at all. Runs great, not a drop. I guess it took 3000 miles to seat rings

When I first wrote in about my oil burning, I had less than 2K on my motor. Now that I have 6,000 miles, the bike has stopped drinking oil and in fact it doesn't burn a drop. It stopped burning oil after 3000 miles.
