Just an FYI - I had read somewhere that it was possible to remove/replace the oil filter without removing fairings. Guess what, its TRUE - just reach in, spin it off, and pull it out the right side fairing. FWIW, I also put down a good sized rag under the filter (on top the pipes) to catch oil that comes out when filter comes off.
To make things super easy next time, I used the K&N filter with the wrench point on top, and as it turns out the head of the filter is easily accessible with a box-end wrench if its on too tight to hand loosen.
