Supposedly, Honda has a neat trick to mimic slipper clutch without the additional cost and weight. Have you tried it on your bike?

lol - don't know if I've tried it "intentionally".

Its not an engine saver for over-revs like a true slipper, but I think its designed just to take the lash out of less than perfect downshifts by varying intake air via a servo controlled butterfly valve. I will say that high rpm quick downshifts on this bike have yet to produce rear stepping out moments, but I try to match rev downshift as much as possible anyways. hope that helps.

Yeah, I wonder how is it compare to a standard slipper clutch. I prefer to rev-match while downshifting, but what Honda has to offer is intriguing (if it's close to how a slipper clutch works).

All I know is I accidently slammed down to 2nd gear in Pahrump on Turn 8. I was going about 80 mph and I just heard a really loud whirling noise. The rear moved slightly but other than that, nothing else. So I think my slipper worked.

what's the trick?

What Chaz said...

Just downshift it without rev match and see if the butterfly valve on your bike helps eliminate rear wheel spins

Buy an R6 or GSXR.

R6's now come with slipper clutch? Wow, I didn't know that. Not that I need to use it, with a lot of practice I can downshift and rev match 3 times in a role now.

Both did, starting in 06. Not sure on the Kawai's. I think the Gixxar's are better though. Cam said when he slammed down gears on his bike, there's a huge clanking sound. He said it scared the crap outta him the first time he used it.

I know the 6RR had it way before everyone else in 03. Master Yoda on Sportbikers.Net has one.

Ive seen a bunch of posts on guys putting true slipper clutches in 07's...but its a track thing to keep from popping a motor on high-rev downshifts. Most have said the IACV (Intake Air Control Valve) does about 30% of what a slipper clutch does. They other function of the IACV is to smooth out the transition from no throttle to throttle on response. I would say it does both things really well.

oh that... yeah, i had noticed very smooth down-shifts without needing to do much in the way of rev matching.

even mentioned it to a friend a couple weeks ago. :udontsay

Lol but then I would have to bail off this forum, which I just signed up for, get a new login name create a new password and profile. Screw it I am just gonna rev match.:thumb

As mentioned, Honda engineered the IACV to function in place of a slipper clutch. Also, as mentioned it does not have the same results as a slipper. The IACV does an outstanding job of smoothing out less than perfect downshifts, although you still need to atempt decent downshifts... it isn't a miricale worker. The transition from off throttle to on throttle is also smoothed out by this device, and reduces the lash. The throttle is very stiff on the 07/08 600rr, so this is a welcomed addition.

I have had no issues with my bike, and have not once wished for a slipper clutch. I can click off fairly high rpm downshifts in the rain with out any wheel lockup, so something must be doing its job.

I am not used to slipper clutches so when I was on an 07 I didn't try to ride like I had one. I did notice that when cracking open the throttle the bike didn't seem that smooth. I HEAR a PCIII will fix that.
