What do you guys/gals use to clean your chain? I use WD40 and a soft tooth brush to clean both sides of the chain and sprocket, then spray a light layer of Maxima chain wax. I know a lot of people do not recommend using WD40 to clean your chain because it may damange the O-ring seal. But, I used it on my 2002 F4i and the OEM chain lasted close to 18k miles without an issue. So, I'm going to continue to use this method.

I use Dupont Multi-Use Teflon Lube. After reading up on the stuff from some cycle geeks in the FZ forums, I went and bought some and tried it on my old bike. Its a 2-stage lube, and is safe for O-ring chains. The first stage is a cleaning agent, which evaporates quickly. The second is a teflon lube that dries to a waxy finish. You spray it on LIBERALLY with a rag or box underneath and wipe it lightly with a rag. The stuff does not leave an oil film, and after 400 miles my chain will still look clean as it doesn't attract dirt. In other words, I NEVER clean my chain...just reapply this stuff every other fillup.

I know - sounds too good to be true...but I used it on my old bike which I sold at 16,500 miles and it still had plenty of adjustment left in the chain and the cogs did not appear very worn. I will be the guinea pig for this stuff on my CBR for you guys. :P

I do a mixture of both of what you two said. I use WD40 on a rag to clean my chain and my sprocket then I let it dry, after that I use Dupont Teflon Lube. Usually spary it on and let it dry to a nice thin waxy finish. Currently on 9K on my bike with the original chain and it still looks good and lots of life left in it.

The Jikser way of chain cleaning. (Frequency 1x/month)

Toothbrush
Kerosene
Bel-Rey chain lube
rags
New Castle
Marlboros

Bike on "N". Set up bike on rear stand. (if you don't have one..borrow from James). Wash hands, step aside...grab a cold new castle, light up a marlboro...and relax. Pour a good amount of kerosene in a bowl container. Use toothbrush to scrub each link, occasionally soaking the brush in the kerosene. Make sure you get all the gunk in each link. Wipe dry with rags. Wash hands, step aside...grab a cold new castle, light up a marlboro...and relax. Spray a light coat of Bel-rey onto the chainlink. Wash hands, step aside...grab a cold new castle, light up a marlboro...and relax. Wipe excess lube. Wash hands, step aside...grab a cold new castle, light up a marlboro...and relax.

Wait til the next day...to go riding (Sober)...then after the ride spray another light coat...wipe excess lube, wipe gunk on the undertail and swingarm. Wash hands, step aside...grab a cold new castle, light up a marlboro...and relax.

I've been just using the WD40 for the past couple years. I was going through 520 chains at around 20k miles, anyway and abusing the hell out of them.

Also, don't forget to clean your sprockets when doing chain maintenance. A lot of people tend to neglect this.

I did a similar version of this last night. Although it involved 1/2 a bottle of cheap wine and no Marlboros. It also involved WD-40 'cause I was fresh out of Kerosene (and it smells better).

Unfortunately, the more cheap wine I had, the less careful I was about spraying the chain. Now there's chain lube on the side of my tire. :doh

Aside from sideways smoky burnouts, is there a better way to get the lube off of my tire? Or do I just have to ride gingerly for a while? In the future, how can I prevent this?

It'll come off real easy. To avoid it in the future, aside from obviously not drinking until you're at least halfway done, is just hold a rag behind the chain as you spray it. Just follow along the spray stream with your other hand and the rag, and you won't get it anywhere you don't wanna.

I usually wear those disposable rubber mechanical gloves and as I spray I use my other hand as a shield to in case.

I have piece of cardboard that I use to cover the other side whenever I spray anything on the chain, so It doesn't get all over the place.
