So I was curious...and did a little research on personal helicopters. One of the more interesting threads I came across is this:

The idea of lifting off the ground doesn't seem to be so much the problem, but its far from being able to sustain flight enough to say fly around the neighborhood. There are numerous problems once the craft starts moving forward or gets above a certain altitude. I guess the main problem is fixed pitch blades vs. collective pitch.

The most available personal helipcopter is the GEN H-4, and its also not likely that you will be able to fly it very far or high:

Now THIS one looks a little more promising, it has collective pitch:

more linky added^^

yeah - $35K for the kit on the H4 - guess that's why people have been strapping lawnmowers to their back for a while. Kind of reminds me of the time I jumped off my parents roof with an umbrella when I was a kid. Hey, looked good on paper and you know what we engineers say:

If it looks good on paper........

....you got some GOOD looking paper!

U know what's cool? Bikes are a lot like copters - your front wheel is a gyroscope and you use the processional forces to steer it (as in push right, to turn right).
