what did u guys use to clean the lens?...before putting the lens protector on?..

cnk

I just put them on a little while ago. I used some alcohol wipes to clean and prep the area. I then wiped it dry with a paper towel and then re-wet it with another alcohol wipe. I peeled the lens protector off and then placed it onto the headlight and slowly squeegeed the air out from underneath. There are some small air bubbles, but I'm hoping these are just like the 3m protectors I have on my car and that they'll go away after a few heat cycles.

The fitment is not perfect, i.e. it does not line up with the entire lens exactly so it's best to determine where you want it before you take the backing off. I would suggest using a mixture of 1/2 distilled water and 1/2 alcohol in a spray bottle if you've never put something like this on before. Spray the headlight and then peel the backing off and spray the protector as well. The mixture will allow you to move the protector around a bit. You can then just push down and squeegee out the solution when you're happy with it's placement. You still have to work quickly though as the solution will evaporate.

Once it's on, it will look like there are some imperfections, but after a few heat cycles, i.e. having the headlights on/off a few times, they should mostly disappear. For larger air bubbles, I would recommend puncturing with a pin and then squeegee out as much air as possible. What you want to avoid is pulling up the material as it will stretch it out and you'll never get a perfect fit after that.

I'll try to take some pics later tonight and post them up. Have to help my wife with our 10 week old daughter now so no promises on the pics tonight. :)

As you can see its a little bit clearer without it on, but thats the price you pay for extra rock chip protection:

Is it because it's slightly smaller?

Just got mine in the mail yesterday.

For those wo haven't installed theirs yet....try this

1. Place a six pack of (beverage of choice) in the freezer.

2. Clean lens by removing dirt, grime, bird shit, etc...wipe clean alcohol or Prep-All.

3. Let dry.

4. If you have a spray bottle...fill with 8oz warm water and a couple of drops dishwashing soap (palmolive <--- less suds). Shake well.

5. Lightly spray lens with a mist of the soapy water. Peel the backing of the vinyl sticker and apply to the lens carefully aligning it to your liking.

6. Use a rubber squeegee...squeeze out the water, thus eliminating air pockets. start from center of the vinyl going out in a circle pattern.

7. Let dry...grab your beverage of choice...take a seat and enjoy your new accomplishment.

Yeah, it was a little smaller then the actual lens so I couldn't just line up one corner and straight edge and peel/roll the rest on.

Thanks for the congrats. . .she's our first child and although it's a lot of hard work. . it's so worth it when they look at you and smile. Especially now that she's over 2 months old and you know that smile isn't just gas. LOL.

Awesome! I'll make it slightly larger on the clear lense kits. The colored ones are oversized so it will cover the lights completely.

Hey James,
What do you make this stuff out of? Do you only make them for lights? Would it work on over say...painted areas?

Yes, as long as the painted has been properly cured, clear coated, and with no paint chips. For example, it's okay on OEM fairings and paint. A lot of the painted motorcycle fairings are either not properly cured or clear coated. I just don't want to deal with that.

I'll try to take some pics more close up to show you which areas are a little short. I know that from a vertical perspective, they were already pretty good.

Tell me about it. . .she can totally aggravate me and then she'll just stop, smile, and coo at me and all is forgiven. We've got her sleeping about 6-7 hours straight at night already so we're in pretty good shape now.

Thought I would post up an update, since helping out is what I'm all about:

Got the clear lens protectors and after washing the bike real good figured it would be a good time to get them on. Sorry I didn't take any pictures, but its pretty *clear* what we are talking about here - two clear plastic "stickers" that go over the headlight lens on the 07-09 CBR to protect it from gettin dinged up by road debris.

I already have 10K miles on my bike and pitting has started on the lights and front fairings, so this is perfect for me. I also am running 4500K HID's in both lights, and leave my high beam on all the time during the day.

Installation was pretty simple, but I found it very difficult to get the stickers lined up. Reason being, they are SUPER sticky and once you have them going on there is no turning back. I ended up pulling one side off about halfway through when it became apparent that it was going to be pretty crooked. As a result, this side is a bit more cloudy than the other one, which even though it is crooked a bit I left alone. I recommend going real slow and checking alignment before rolling it on. Also, to prevent bubbling, go real slow and rub the sticker well for each section as it goes on.

So far, no issues with peeling or further clouding/bubbling. I can't say I notice any difference in brightness at night so that's a good thing. Only time will tell if the stay on or turn yellow, but so far they are doing the job fine.

Cool! Did you use soap water or any liquid during the installation? Yeah, the glue is pretty intense since i has to hold up at over 190 degrees.

Chas4RR
05-29-2008, 05:46 PM
I did it dry, like i always do. But i did clean the bike with soap and water beforehand. There were no instructions if i recall.

Vtec44
05-29-2008, 06:04 PM
Oh, I thought I sent out a PM prior to sending out the actual stuff with the instructions. It wasn't specifically for headlights, but same concept (http://www.scratchon.com/instructions/door-edges/). If you want, I can send out a set of all different colors so you can try it out.

Chas4RR

Ah - what a great idea...using the "solution". I'm good with the way it turned out on mine for now, but will def use that technique if I do it again.

Question: how flexible is the material? Is it possible to manufacture an entire front "bra" to protect fairings from stone damage? That would be really cool - even a couple of pieces that cover the top sides of the front fairing would go a long way towards saving the front fairing from damage caused while riding *at speed* :)

Chas4RR
05-29-2008, 08:36 PM
Also - an extra piece to protect my neck - sometimes i get a pebble from one of those messican construction trucks and it hurts like a mofo!

j/k

Vtec44

It is very fexible, since I have it on my cars. However because of the difference in painting technique, it will lift up the aftermarket paint if it's not properly clear coated and cured.
