true but NOT necessary

leave it in gear and use a screw driver ,pry bar or something similar
to pry down the rear brake at the lever

remove nut
install new one
torque to spec
remove pry bar
adjust chain

I don't like leaving in gear for fear of damaging something. (i'm not Mexican :loser)

I usually have an assistant stand on the rear brake whilst loosening...that is until I bought my handy dandy Snap-on Electric Impact.

If you want to do it the way us white people do it then you can barrow my air impact. :owneddance

You would have to have a compressed air source though. Actually i have a small air tank that just might work.

now I need to find a torque wrench

wait a sec, did you say torque wrench, ZMAN? that's a first, oh wait, he said, torque to spec... by feel right Rudy? :D

How did you do it? Step by step yo, to help archive this.

Jotaro

oh man, well, honestly ghetto style

bike was set on baxley chock, open the sprocket cover (i've got vortex rearset on so didn't need to take the rod out of the way), no rear stand yet (let the bike's weight stop the spin via rear tire) then using 1/2" drive wrench 14mm loosen the bolt out.

then i got the rear stand, loosen rear axle, move the chain adjuster for some slack then take out the front sprocket and swap it.

hand tighten the bolt back in, adjust the chain, tighten the axle, take out the rear stand and tighten the sprocket bolt (Rudy style for now.) Replace cover and voila.

How to change a front sprocket (MishMash-style):

1. Put the rear of the bike on a stand.
2. Take wood pine dowel (like closet rod) and wedge between rear wheel and top of bottom swingarm spar. This prevents need for getting fancy with rear brake
3. Put bike in gear.
4. Remove shift linkage and sprocket cover if they are in the way.
5. With breaker bar and appropriate socket, loosen front countershaft nut
6. Loosen Rear Axle and Chain Tensioners
7. Slide rear wheel forward
8. Remove front sprocket.
9. Insert new front sprocket and put chain over
10. hand-tighten front countershaft nut
11. Slide rear wheel backward
12. set chain tensioners
13. tighten rear axle
14. Tighten and torque countershaft new
15. replace sprocket cover and shift linkage if required
16. remove dowel
17. put bike in neutral
18. remove from stand

There is washer but not locking, also bolt is not self-locking, but I'll double check on it.
What about BLUE btw?

Davey Cracker
05-01-2008, 12:59 PM
Wait, does your bike just a bolt thats going through the center of the sprocket? As opposed to a big nut holding it on? I just looked at a pic of an '05 600rr, assuming that's what you have...dunno.

I said big nut.
