Jen,
Looking at Rudy's thread, I was thinking about painting my track plastics. I was wondering if you could help me out. What's need to prep my plastics? What kind of paint should I use? Is there a special paint brush or can I use the roller brush? Also, what's the difference b/w a gloss finish and a matte finish? Which one will get your panites wet?
TIA,
Your favorite Asain "Non Crazy" man.

Hi Dave.
Painting track plastics can be fun and exciting, and very time consuming. What sort of finish are you looking to have (flat or glossy?) Are you painting the OEM plastics or fiberglass ones? A flat or matte finish is a dull sort of finish and absorbs light. A glossy one is shiny and reflects the light. The pictures you saw in Zman's thread were of a glossy finish. Are you thinking of adding more ghey purple to your bike as well? Or perhaps some nice rainbows?
To prep the track plastics, you want to wipe them down and make sure they are free from dirt and grease. Take a fine grit sandpaper and lightly rough up the surface and then take a damp rag and wipe away all of the dust.
You will want to use paint that is specific to the material you are bonding it to. A good place to look is an automotive detailing shop. MAKE SURE you use a primer in order to keep the paint properly bonded to your plastics. Otherwise you run the risk of it chipping off.
You will want to use a spray type of paint and will probably want to borrow or invest in a spray gun. DO NOT use anything that needs to be brushed/rolled on for a base coat. Rattle can spray paint primers can be used if you are meticulous and patient enough to spray evenly to avoid runs. Be sure also to allow for the appropriate amount of drying time between the primer and base coats.
Some people insist on painting their track plastics in a well ventilated area. Despite this, DO NOT paint them outside. Bugs and dust will get stuck to the paint and ruin your finish.
I recommend you go into the most confining, poorly ventilated area that you can find to avoid any contamination. Start out cleaning your plastics with a mixture of bleach and ammonia. If you bring your gay lover with you, make sure he's not giving it to you too hard ITB or he may mess up your finish.
If you have any serious questions instead of ghey fucking tests about doing something you and Rudy already did last weekend, feel free to let me know.
